Storms, Stories, & Sales

We have been so busy this summer that I have to consciously remind myself to slow down and enjoy each day.  I love having the kids home for the summer and try to make the most of it - working play dates and park time in between our classes and errands and chores.  I'm also making an effort to take pictures every day, which helps me to really focus (pun intended) on the moment and/or each child.  These idyllic summer days are slipping by too quickly....a few moments from the past few weeks:

Somehow this has become a tradition at our house - whenever there is a big rainstorm, they run around the cul de sac.  This is also a good view of the old vs. soon-to-be-new mailboxes....

 Soaked!

Haley took advantage of the puddled water along the path to sail a foil boat she'd made.

Jake finished his just-for-fun "Awesome Authors" summer class with our dear friend Laura K., and I got to listen to him read his story, "Transfactory."  It's sure to be a best-seller.  You can view the commercial that he created at their class website.  (Click on the "J" on the left sidebar.)

We also had our annual garage sale, which was very successful.  I almost didn't have it this year, but the kids talked me into it so they could earn spending money for our summer trip.  They worked hard to help set up the sale, bake cookies, and sell lemonade.  Here the boys enjoy a picnic lunch in the front yard - they were so excited to get to drink root beer as a special treat.

Haley had time to read between customers.

A secret message Haley wrote on the table and asked me to photograph.  Let's hope she's not prophetic.

A recent hobby of hers that she teaches to all friends who come to play: using sap from the spruce trees, she "glues" flower petals and pine needles to rocks and leaves.  Very artsy!

Photographic evidence of why we won't win Parents of the Year this year.  We had the truck in back to unload bark mulch and Alex decided it would make a great stepstool.

Haley inherited a love of reading from both Rob and I, but unfortunately also has my tendency to devour books in hours/days.  Once she starts a good one, she simply can NOT put it down.  We got home from church today and she didn't even change before snatching her book back up.  I have to admit, it is a good story.

"The name is Wood.  Jake Wood."

Alex, all dressed up to go to a friend's costume birthday party.

We went to the annual "SummerThing" event in town - art projects, live music, bounce houses - all free.  What a fun community event.

Jake adds to the wind-tunnel mass painting.

At the end of the night they showed a movie in the park.  I didn't think we'd last through the whole thing, but we did!
