ToMAYto, ToMAHto

Tomatoes have taken over our yard! We'd never grown any before, but Rob had dreams of BLT's and fresh tomato sauce, so we planted 4 bushes this year: beefsteaks, 2 varieties of cherry, and grape tomatoes. Little did we know they would be so prolific! Our once-nice, tidy plants are now strangling the carrots, overtaking the strawberries, and completely obscuring Haley's "pizza garden". The ones on either side of the stairs are reaching out to meet each other and we'll soon have to leap from the deck to the grass to avoid squashing them (we can't bear to cut them back!). If it weren't for our coming winter I think the house would be covered by January. But while we shake our heads and complain that we can't find the basil or zuchinis, the tomato juice drips down our chins - especially Jake's - and we can't help but feel some smug satisfaction at our beginner's luck crop.

This tangle of tomatoes covers our "pizza garden" - a cute little pizza-shaped plot outlined with stones and containing (somewhere in there) basil, oregano, thyme, bell peppers, garlic, onions, and "cheese-colored" marigolds.
Haley poses at the top of the stairs, with Big Boy tomatoes on the trellis and red nasturtiums behind her.
