Summer Odyssey 2011 - Tri-Cities Visit

From Salt Lake we headed north to the tri-cities area of eastern Washington, where my Dad, step mom, and their 2 granddaughters had recently relocated. It was lovely to catch up with them and see their new place, as well as visit with my sisters Kimberly (and her family) and Deanna who also live there. I also enjoyed a few - very hilly - runs and dragged my sisters to an RPM spin class with me. Good times! I guess we were too busy talking and having fun, because I don't have very many pictures...

Summer Odyssey 2011 - Fourth of July

Ah, what a fabulous Fourth of July we enjoyed this year! We got to enjoy a parade, set off fireworks, and watch a firework show, all with cousins in Salt Lake City. Being with family makes any holiday more fun, and this was no exception. Thanks for hosting us once again, Perkes and Heiner families!

Summer Odyssey 2011 - Salt Lake

Next on our itinerary was a stop in Salt Lake City to visit the Reynolds clan. We always have such fun visiting them and this time was no different. There are always so many things we want to do and people we want to visit in Salt Lake, and we're so thankful to the Perkes for hosting us nearly every year. It makes living away from family that much easier, knowing that we can come to visit!

We had plenty of time to kick back and catch up while the kids played with their cousins, as well as spend an afternoon of archery with Doug, and a day at Lagoon. We also managed to squeeze in visits with friends Mike and Kristie Constantine and Scott and Sara Edgar - it's so fun to see how their families have grown since we met them years ago in Grand Forks.

We all enjoyed Pace's Dairy Ann bars - which Rob swears are better than any other popsicle anywhere.

Summer Odyssey 2011 - St. George Part III

As if getting to see family wasn't enough, we had the incredible good fortune of getting to meet up with two sets of friends in St George. Through Facebook posts on our drive there, we discovered that friends Jens & Karen (from our time at UW) were on vacation at Zion National Park. We got to meet up with them for lunch before they left town - what a fun surprise! I guess we were too busy visiting to take any pictures...

We also found out that our good friends April and Dave (from our early years in Grand Forks) were going to be in St. George at the same time we were. There may or may not have been some shrieking on the part of April and/or myself as it had been several years since we'd seen them. We tried not to hog ALL of their time and attention, but we enjoyed every minute with them we could. One day we met at a local splash park and let the kids play while we talked. Hopefully it could become an annual reunion....hint, hint, Barnes family!

Can't you just picture them, 7 or eight years down the road, getting ready to go to dances?

Haley and Morgan have been friends since they were infants, and Jake and Abby are the same age and get along well. But sorry buddy, you'll probably always be the shortest one in the group. She has much taller parents than you do.

Summer Odyssey 2011 - St. George Part II

Taking advantage of the proximity of Zion National Park to St. George, we headed up there one day for some hiking and sight-seeing. We were lucky enough to be joined by our friends the Barnes/Fuller family, as well as our cousins and grandparents. We took a tram through the park to the base of the trail, then hiked the (very short) distance to Weeping Rock. It was H-O-T so we let the kids wade in the stream on the way back. Grandma and Grandpa had brought their motor home, which gave us a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch and put the babies down for naps. I see many more hikes through this stunning National Park in our future visits.

I think Alex managed to get the wettest out of all of us.

Summer Odyssey 2011 - St. George Part I

We started out this year's summer vacation in St. George, visiting the Wood family. After so many hectic weeks (see previous post), it was nice to get on the road and enjoy some time together. Lots of time. Lots and lots of time.

The first day - after I taught cycling and we did our last-minute (last-hour-or-two) packing - we made it through an enormous thunderstorm and major detour to arrive in Omaha at 1:00 a.m. Since the motel we wound up at didn't exactly entice us to linger, we headed right back out the next morning and made it to Denver by dinnertime. The third and final day started out great, with a picnic lunch at a fabulous park in Vail, CO. But by late afternoon we were tired of the car, tired of our snacks, tired of fast food, and maybe a just a teeny bit tired of all that family togetherness. We finally - finally! - rolled into grandma and grandpa's driveway after dark and knew instantly it was worth the drive.

Busy, Busy, Busy

It has been a flurry of activity around here as we try to get projects done before leaving on our summer trip. Cake baking, a garage sale, a local duathlon, baby showers, art festivals, ballet classes, art classes, kindergarten-prep classes, and putting in a veggie garden have kept us busy, not to mention the biggest project by far - starting to build the fence around the back yard. I can't believe it's only been a few weeks since school got out!

Speaking of busy, Alex keeps us on our toes ALL the time. Whether re-organizing the tupperware cupboard for me or finding his way outside all by himself, he is living up to the toddler stereotype. But at least he has cute boots on while doing it!

Jake signed up for a kindergarten-readiness class at the local school, where he gets to experience a little of what school will be like next year. He says it's pretty much like pre-school, but he's made some good friends and can't wait for the fall. All the rest of the time he can be found playing with the huge clumps of clay that were dug up for the fence-post holes. He makes Transformers, super heroes, and enormous (and heavy) balls out of it. He says it's like "super PlayDough."

Haley decided to return to ballet after a few years' break. She loves it so far but says it is hard work! She also signed up for a two-week summer art class and is excited to go every day. I think she would take ten art classes if she could.

The spot for the future front gate with an arbor over it. After much researching and studying, Rob rented a huge auger to dig 4-foot holes for the fence posts. They are lined with a super-thick cardboard tube (so the frozen ground can't grab and lift them when it heaves all winter). The extra-long posts are placed in the cardboard tubes and then concrete is poured around the posts. They should be VERY secure and stand up to our harsh winds and winters. The goal is to have all the posts set before we leave town...

If we're recovered from fence-building by next summer, we'll be building a deck, paved dining area, and in-ground fire pit in the back yard, with perennial beds along the house and fence.

This is the "easement" area behind our yard. It will be outside the fence, but I'm planning to plant raspberries back there eventually.

The garden sure seemed huuuuge when I was digging out the grass for it. Eventually it will be raised beds but for now we just dug some peat moss into the existing soil. We're looking forward to lots of tomatoes (cherry, grape, and slicing), bell peppers, purple ruffled and Genovese basil, Italian parsley, tons of cucumbers, carrots, and zucchini squash.

Between activities the kids have had lots of fun with neighborhood friends. A favorite pastime is catching bugs and butterflies (with MUCH screaming and shrieking). Hurray for summer break!

School's Out For The Summer!

Today was the last day of school for the year - we had lots of cheers and only a few tears this time around. Jake graduated from preschool and will miss playing with the Legos as well as a few of his buddies. Haley had a great 2nd grade year and will miss a wonderful teacher and all of her friends. We're looking forward to a fun summer of travel, sprinklers, slip n' slides, splash parks, swimming, gardening, bike rides, and s'mores.

Today Haley was baptized and confirmed a member of our Church. We'd all been looking forward to it for so long, especially because Grandpa Breckon was traveling out to visit for the occasion. Unfortunately he caught a nasty bug on the train ride out and was sick and miserable the whole time he was here. He was able to attend the baptism itself at least, and we were happy he was here to share the experience with us. But I don't think he'll be coming back for a long time.

It was a beautiful day, a beautiful service, and we couldn't be more proud of the young lady that Haley is becoming. She is sweet, generous, thoughtful, helpful, and caring. We feel so lucky to know her and learn so much by being her parents.

Fire Station Visit

Yesterday we met friends at Fire Station #4 here in town to take a tour and meet the firefighters. I even pulled Haley out of school for a few hours so she could come too. Most of the kids were a little shy but it was fun to see the firefighters' living quarters, gear, and the trucks of course. Alex was content to run away from me and try to push any and all buttons (both literally and figuratively).

Funniest moment of the day: The kids were looking through a thermal-imaging camera and I happened to be in the viewfinder. Haley: "That's my mom!" Firefighter: "Does she always look like that?" Haley: "No, she's had 3 kids." I guess it's time to redouble my efforts at the gym!

Alex was sleepy and uncooperative and wouldn't keep his hat on for the picture.

Garden Party & Author Visit

Our local nursery had a garden party this past week, with the author of the American Girl Lanie books. So of course Haley, Lanie and I had to head over. There were flowers, treats, books, and lots of little girls - what could be more fun? Haley had her book signed and we enjoyed walking up and down all the aisles of flowers. I'm not sure if it's safe to say that Spring has finally arrived, but we are sure ready for it!

Haley's 8th Birthday & Tea Party

Pinkies lifted, please! For Haley's 8th birthday she invited friends over for a Birthday Tea Party. There were lots of bite-size snacks and sandwiches, lemonade for the "tea", and lots of giggling and silliness. The girls were too old to play dress-up for it, but did ooh and aah over the decorations and table. Rob sent them on a fabulously long and involved treasure hunt for their treat bags before they decorated their own mini cupcakes.

With sunny weather and good friends, it couldn't have been more perfect. Happy Birthday, Haley!!!

After a little coaxing and pleading, we convinced Jake to try riding his bike with no training wheels this weekend. He was a rock star and had it down within 10 minutes. We knew he was close to ready, but it still surprised us! GO JAKE!!! He can also climb the climbing tree by himself this year, as well as cross the monkey bars - oh, the things a 5-year-old can do!

Easter 2011

I think Easter ties with Halloween for the kids' 2nd-favorite holiday (after Christmas, of course) - they look forward so much to the dying and hunting and baskets and candy. Myself, I love the season - the renewal of the Earth and our spirits after a long, dark winter. We hope you all had a very peaceful and joyful Easter!

We managed to dye all the eggs with only one major spill and a few cracked shells.

Fun to poke, but he sure wasn't going to eat it. Fine, more for me!

We kept Alex buckled in for this activity - otherwise he would have been on
the table, drinking the cups of dye.

Haley found everyone's baskets within about 5 minutes of getting home from church. Next year the Easter bunny will have to try a little harder! Alex was thrilled with his new sippy cups as well as the candy, of course.

Of course I try to snap a picture after three hours of church and right after they found their baskets. We'll have to do formal pictures another day!

I wish I had videotaped Jake eating his Reese's bunny - he was in rapture, saying "Oh yum!" and "This is the best thing ever!" with a mouthful of peanut butter and chocolate while his eyes rolled back in his head. They are my kids, for sure!

Annual Flooding of The Red

It's hard to believe it's only been 3 weeks since the March 14th blizzard, but now all but the biggest piles of snow have melted and our region is preparing for major flooding. We drove over to the river to take a look and were very impressed with the level of the water this year. Once again we are very grateful for our town's dikes system - we are completely safe from the flood but all the surrounding communities are not. Hopefully the waters will recede soon.

Blizzard & Sioux Game

Last Friday night we scored box seats to the Sioux hockey game. We were so tired from Jake's party but knew it was an opportunity we couldn't pass by. So we bundled up against the coming storm and headed over to the hockey arena. The game was already underway when we got to the suite and they scored 3 consecutive goals right away. The screaming fans and fireworks startled the kids at first, but we soon settled in and got used to the noise. What a fun night - we will definitely be going to more games next year...anyone want to go in on a suite with us?!

A blizzard had been forecast for that night and it was picking up steam when we arrived at the game. But by the time we left it was full-force - I'd never seen anything like it in all our 8 years here. I was grateful that we didn't live out of town because it was hard enough to see the main roads to our house. This winter has felt long and extra-cold - we hope this is our last storm of the year!

SUPER HEROES PARTY!

We celebrated Jake's 5th birthday with a Super Heroes Party this past weekend. He couldn't decide on just one super hero, so all heroes, Jedi warriors, princesses, and other brave souls were welcome. Friends came dressed as super heroes to eat lots of snacks and candy, play pin-the-mask-on-Batman and pass-the-kryptonite, and complete the Super Hero Training Course. Jake was SUPER excited to have his friends celebrate with him - it was a great day!

Super-Jake, Five-Year-Old

At 5 years old, Jake still surprises us daily with what he says and does. He wakes up - bright and early - and is raring to go from the minute he opens his eyes. After a few minutes of snuggling with us he literally bounces out of bed and greets each day with energy and enthusiasm (Rob and I are alternately impressed, envious, and annoyed at this). He is creative, funny, sweet, helpful, feisty, and incredibly good at math for a preschooler. Jake L-O-V-E-S Legos and will disappear into his room with a new set, emerging an hour or two later with it all built perfectly. He still loves Transformers and any super heroes, as well as Star Wars and Indiana Jones (from playing the Lego Wii games of those movies) and will engage in battle with pretty much anyone anywhere. He and Haley are best friends and love to play together, and he's a great big brother to Alex, putting up with Alex's teasing and curiosity. We are so lucky to have him as part of our family and life would sure be boring without him around. Happy Birthday, Jakey!

This was Jake's first year getting to make school Valentines. He picked Toy Story 3 ones and very carefully determined which ones went to the boys and which went to the girls. He signed his name on each one and was so very excited to bring home his stash from school the next day. Jake is such a love-bug; I'm glad he was one of my Valentines!

Winter Fun

We try to keep busy as much as possible in the winter to keep the cabin fever at bay. A few things we've done recently:

The First Lego League was holding a regional competition at the university, so we headed over to watch. With the recent Lego fascination in our house the kids had a great time watching the teams work with their robots. Some of them were very...intense, but what a fun event to watch. We'll have to see if we can get a team started at the kids' school.

The annual cardboard-box sledding competition took place at our favorite sledding hill one Saturday so we stopped by to watch for a while. Haley and Jake got a kick out of all the creative sleds and I'm pretty sure we'll be competing next year. Who's in?

When you don't want to get all bundled up to go play in the snow, why not bring some inside? As part of a winter craft project we had some pans full of snow and the kids thought it was lots of fun to play with it inside. Who knew?

Winter really is lovely and peaceful here, especially at sunrise. But we're looking forward to summer sunrises too.

A Day In The Life of Alex, 18 months old

Wake up. Snuggle with mom, then begin using her and dad as a jungle gym.
Go downstairs with Dad and Jake. Snack on cereal and bananas in high chair.
Hands up in the air declare "All done!"
Check recycling bin for items that need to be moved to the garbage. Move said items.
Wander the house for items that need to go in the garbage. eg: i-pods, shoes, sippy cups, toys, any piece of loose paper, socks, etc.
Check garbage can for items that are not garbage. eg: scraps of paper, half-eaten apples, wrappers, banana peels, etc.
Take off socks and shoes.
Remove all pillows from all couches and chairs.
Remove all pots and pans from cupboards.
Remove all tupperware from cupboard.
Remove all cutting boards and cookie sheets from cupboard.
Look out the window for the neighbors' garbage cans.
Climb on a chair to see what's on the dining room table - remove any items with grand sweeps of the arm.
Look for stray cheerios or raisins on the floor. Eat them.
Look out the kitchen door for rabbits or squirrels or gophers or birds.
Take off socks and shoes again.
Fill diaper. Excitedly take dirty diaper out to the "gar-gar."
Wander around the downstairs in search of "mamama.'
After finding Mama, demand, "Up!" and then lay head on her shoulder while patting her with both hands.
Open pantry. Proceed to empty pantry of all soup, canned tomatoes and vegetables, and boxes of crackers.
Untie "baby-proofing" that mom put on pantry handles and repeat above.
Haul around any large object, including but not limited to: laundry baskets (full or empty), bar stools, child-size rocking chairs, garbage cans (full or empty), art easels, plastic bins full of toys.
Sneak up onto mom's office chair and send a few e-mails.
Climb the first few stairs to be able to reach the light switch. Turn lights on and off at least 20 times.
Climb up the rest of the stairs; look for objects to throw down the stairs.
Find smaller objects to drop through the rails to the entry floor 12 feet below.
Flush a toilet a time or two.
Remove all newspapers from basket next to the fireplace; scatter them about.
Find mom's phone that she was silly enough to leave within reach; make a few calls.
Sneak into the bathroom and stuff a bunch of toilet paper down the toilet, flush it, then sneak out again and leave a fun flooded mess for someone to find an hour later.
Have a snack & guzzle down a cup of milk/eggnog.
Nap for 2 hours.
Wake, and repeat.

New Year's Eve 2010

We rang in the New Year with lots of food, Wii and friends - just perfect, despite the blizzard raging outside. I really didn't think the kids would all make it to midnight, but they did (well, Alex made it to about 10:30). Here's to 2011 - Happy New Year!!!

Fun With Bill & A Birthday

The day after Christmas we were lucky enough to have our friend Bill come to visit. The kids always look forward to seeing him and Rob was happy to have someone to share his birthday spotlight. Jake was thrilled to have help passing levels on his Wii games and we spent a relaxing week together. Bill was also lucky enough to experience a true North Dakota blizzard on his last day here...brrr...

We tried to keep the birthday celebration low-key as requested by the guys, but had to at least have some balloons and decorations per the kids. We went with "orange" as a theme since it's a favorite color of both Rob and Bill. Happy 40-something Birthday, guys!

Christmas Day 2010

Christmas morning is the absolute best with kids, especially the ages ours are at right now. Jake in particular is very expressive and so fun to watch as he opens each gift. I hope they all treasure these holiday memories as much as Rob and I do.

Stockings are opened upon waking up in our house, before going downstairs to see what's under the Christmas tree. It gives mom and dad a few minutes to wake up while the kids open little gifts and treats. Jake was thrilled to find the first of his Lego gifts.

As always we all felt spoiled and loved to pieces by our family and friends. Thank you all for helping make this a wonderful holiday. We love and miss you!

The rest of Christmas Day was spent snacking, reading new books, playing with new toys, and building the Apple Tree House Lego set - I have to confess that I really enjoyed helping Jake build it. What fun.

As the day wound down we heard about someone in town who had spent the holiday alone and could use a little cheering up. We gathered presents and food together and drove across town to drop them off, having a wonderful talk with the kids along the way about service and thinking of others. We'll never know if or how much our small gifts affected the recipient, but it sure affected our family in a positive way - I think it's my favorite memory of the day. We wish you all love and peace, and a very Merry Christmas!

I put off taking our Christmas photos this year because I knew it would be exhausting. I wasn't wrong....in retrospect maybe bribing Alex with bits of candy cane to get him to hold still wasn't the best strategy - he only got crazier as the camera kept clicking. Finally I surrendered and had to settle for a shot that was "good enough."

Decking the Halls

For our whole marriage I've managed to persuade Rob to follow my family's tradition of putting up our Christmas tree on the Saturday following Thanksgiving - and it had to be a REAL tree (with all its pine-y good smell). But unfortunately, it's hard to get a really fresh tree here, and the last few years ours has been crisp and shriveled by Christmas Day.

So this year he persuaded me to wait a few weeks on the tree...we'll see if it pays off with a still-lush noble fir come Christmas morning.

Thank goodness we were smart and took advantage of some late warm weather to hang the roof lights. Maybe next year we'll get some in the trees.

Trunk or Treat '10

We decided months ago what our family costumes would be for the church Halloween party this year, and I've been busy sewing (yes, sewing!) them. Since I've sewn about five items in my entire life, this has been quite an adventure. But they seem to have come out alright. It's not by any means an original idea, but the kids were sure excited about it! We were so busy with the event that we didn't get a group shot, but here we all are:

Carving It Up

Great Excuse to Get Out of Town

Late in October we heard that some old friends were going to be in Minneapolis for the weekend. I had been looking for an excuse to get out of town so we quickly canceled any commitments and headed to "the Cities." While Scott and Sarah attended a wedding, we made our usual rounds to guitar stores and favorite shopping spots before meeting up with them. We had planned to go to an apple orchard, but with the wet weather we decided to explore the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center instead. The mist and fog made it feel mysterious, and the kids loved exploring it all. Thanks Scott and Sara, for a great weekend!

Our annual trip to the pumpkin patch was blessedly warm this year. We spent the afternoon playing in the hay, exploring the haunted forest, playing hide-and-seek in the corn maze, and picking out a few good pumpkins.

Fargo Mini Half Marathon

One sunny and unseasonably hot (90 degrees) Saturday in October, we headed down to Fargo for another half marathon. I had trained for months and was hoping to improve my time by quite a bit - shaving a full minute and a half per mile off my previous time. Unfortunately two days before the race I came down with a flu and spent my race-prep time downing tons of vitamin C and hoping my fever would go away.

By race morning I was feeling better, if not quite 100%, and headed to the starting line. The first 9 miles went great - I was right on pace & feeling strong, and got a good boost seeing Rob and the kids along the course. And then I BONKED. I felt like I was still on pace, but every time I looked at my watch I was going slower and slower. Pretty soon my body gave up and my head followed shortly thereafter. If someone had offered to give me a ride to the finish line I would have taken it - I was too tired care any more! All my reserves built up by weeks of training had been wiped out by the illness. So I walked the remaining 4 miles to the finish line and finished with almost the same time as my first half-marathon. I did finish, and I will be beating my time someday...as soon as I stock up on hand sanitizer.

The BEST part of the day, and the whole reason I signed up for this race to begin with, was that my friend Amy ran it (her first half-marathon), and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. WAY TO GO AMY!!!

Why are kids so incredibly sweet when they're asleep? Maybe because they're not whining or fighting or asserting their independence? Whatever the reason, I love it. It makes me want to pick them up and rock them back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Because no matter how big they get, as long as I'm living my babies they'll be.

I can't remember exactly how Alex wound up like this, on our bedroom floor.

Jake has been requiring multiple "snuggly friends" at bedtime lately. Here he is sound asleep with Caramel, Lucky Puppy, Snowball, Bunny, CuddlyBear, and Fuzzy-T, the Transformers blanket.

We had SUCH a FABULOUS time in Washington, D.C. over Labor Day Weekend. What a wonderful place to visit with the kids - there is so much to see and do, and most of it is free! To make things even better, Grandma and Grandpa Wood met us there and gave us the inside scoop on their top picks. The kids were great travelers, we got to stay in two different fabulous hotels, and I didn't lose any of the kids on the subway (which I was terrified of doing). It's a great place to visit and we highly recommend it to everyone!

Of course we couldn't see it all, so we tried to hit the major sights and museums. A lot of walking and subway rides later, this is what we saw:

The subway was pretty darn exciting at first - not so much by the end of the week. However I have to admit that I was still wowed every time we took the enormous escalators up out of the Dupont Circle station.

Oh, we could have spent the whole week at the Air and Space Museum - we walked through the shuttle dozens of times and tried to see all of the museum, but we'll have to go back some day.

It was H.O.T. and humid that week so we tried to stay in the museums during the day and see the monuments in the evenings.

What a TREAT we had waiting for us at the Capitol. One of Rob's former students was an aide in Senator Dorgan's office, and the senator was kind enough to take a few minutes to talk with us and let the kids try out his desk. Then we were off for a private tour of the capitol - what a great experience!

On our last day we were thrilled to be joined by old-UW-college-day friends Jens and Karen at the National Zoo. It was hot, super crowded, and the kids were a little tired of sightseeing, but it was wonderful to have a few hours to catch up with them.

Baby Brother

It must be hard being the youngest in the family - always wanting to do what the big kids are doing. Alex loves to be outside, but since our yard is unfenced (so far) he can only go outside with me. Luckily at 14 months he's still little enough to get enjoyment from just watching Haley and Jake play outside.

And it's not like there aren't perks to being the baby, either. Take dinner time for example - who else gets to make SUCH a BIG MESS? Almost all of the spaghetti got eaten, except for a few stray noodles stuck to the window.

As hard as it was to send Haley off to school, it was a little easier to watch Jake start pre-school the following week - he was SO EXCITED. He's been ready to start school since last Spring when he turned 4 and just couldn't wait to be in on the fun. The first day he pulled me down the steps saying, "Come ON, Mom!"

Jake is going to the same pre-school that Haley went to, and was even lucky enough to get the same teacher too. He goes two mornings a week and so far he loves everything about it - show and tell, recess, snack time, crafts, music, new friends, and of course his Transformers backpack. As fierce as Jake was as a baby and toddler, he is turning into such a sweet and helpful big kid. He's my best little buddy and I'm going to miss him terribly when he starts kindergarten next year...so I refuse to think about that for now and will just enjoy the days and afternoons I get to spend with him.

Back-to-school time came way too quickly this year, and before I knew it we were sending Haley off to 2nd grade. I always loved going back to school as a kid, with new school supplies and clothes and tanned-and-bug-bitten limbs. But it's different as a parent and I have to hide my true emotions in order to be sure our kids feel that same sense of excitement and adventure. It all just goes by so fast and every year I can see her growing up - and just a little more away from me. Of course it's also exciting to watch Haley becoming her own person, with her own ideas and opinions, and I can't wait to see how she'll grow and change this year. Here's to a wonderful school year, Haley!

In kindergarten she read a (very old) book where the kids brought apples to the teacher. Loving old-fashioned stuff as she does, this is now one of her traditions.

Maple Lake

I know I've posted about Maple Lake in years past, but it's one of my favorite nearby spots to spend a summer day. If I squint just right I can almost pretend I'm at Chism beach on Lake Washington, with Mt. Rainer to the south and sailboats bobbing towards Mercer Island just ahead. Okay, that's a stretch, but it does remind me just a teeny bit of the lakeside parks back home and the kids and I try to make it out there every few weeks in the summer.

This year the water level was very high, leaving only a tiny strip of sand for playing in, but that didn't stop the kids from digging and building in it. It's fun to watch Haley and Jake's new-found confidence in the water after only one session of swim lessons, and I look forward to the day when Alex has some water safety skills as well. For now we're content to splash in the shallows and only drink a few mouthfuls of lake water.

Church Campout

This past weekend we participated in our church camp out at Turtle River State Park. I was not too excited about the idea, but Haley and Jake were thrilled to get to go camping again. For me, camping plus a just-walking toddler equals a lot of work, mess, and headache.

However I was pleasantly surprised, and the weekend was a big success. The kids played happily with friends while we helped with dinner and Rob set up his gear for the evening's musical program - a touching re-telling of the Mormon pioneers' journey to Salt Lake. Afterward we enjoyed s'mores around the fire with friends; the kids could make s'mores every night of the summer and not get tired of them. It turned out to be a memorable and enjoyable trip that I hope we get to repeat every year.

Fun In The Sun

Home from our month-long road trip, we tried to make the most of our last weeks of summer vacation. I love having all the kids home - the lazy mornings, afternoons at the lake or the park, having all the neighborhood kids over to play on the slip n' slide. What a wonderful time of life; I hope their memories of these summers are as good as mine are.

The field behind our house had wheat growing in it this year, which just begged to be ran through. We had friends over one night and let the kids go, hoping the farmer didn't knock on our door the next day.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Goodbye Seattle

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Point Defiance

We took advantage of the gorgeous weather one day and headed down the hill from Chris and Jen's to Point Defiance park where we enjoyed an afternoon of stunning views while the kids played along the shore. Afternoons at the lakeside are some of my favorite childhood memories, and I was happy to share it with our kids.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Alex Turns One

On July 9th Alex turned ONE and we celebrated at a beautiful lakeside park with family for a "bubbles"-themed party. He loved the balloons and balls and bubbles, and thoroughly enjoyed his cake. This was the first time that we've been near family for one of the kids' birthdays, and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate with them all.

At one year old, Alex:

Loves to laugh.
Loves to tease. I can ask him to say, "Mama" a hundred times and every time he'll laugh and say, "Dada!" Hilarious.
Adores his brother and sister, and lights up whenever they come into the room.
Says, "Mama" (sometimes), "Dada", "Uh-Oh", and "Gar-gar" for garbage.
His favorite thing is to put his dirty diaper in the big garbage can in the garage.
Gives huge, drool-y-mouthed kisses.
Is such a sweet little peanut and we don't know what we'd do without him.

We hoped this would help him take his first steps...he loved it.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Seattle Part II

There really is no more beautiful place in the summer than Seattle (go ahead and argue - you won't convince me!). Blue skies, green hills, lakes and ponds everywhere, mountains in the distance to the east and west....I was so happy that the kids got to experience it for short while at least. We left the Breckon's and stayed with Grandma Ann for a little while, taking day trips to North Seattle and Bellingham. It flew by all to quickly, but those precious few days were heavenly.

Seattle was in the midst of a heat wave (above 90 degrees) and the kids were happy to cool off in this cute fountain at University Village.

Mmm...Ivar's. We managed to snag a table on the deck out back where we could watch the boats sail by on Lake Union while we enjoyed our salmon chowder and fish 'n chips.

We took a day trip up to Bellingham just for fun. We explored the downtown and had great Thai food for lunch; played at a waterfront park with stunning vistas; and drove around the WWU campus. What a beautiful city.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Seattle Part I

Our 4th of July was celebrated road-side this year, as we were still traveling from California. We pulled off the freeway and climbed to the top of a parking garage for a great show. We were all tired of being in the car (Alex was entertained by Ke$ha songs, but that only worked for so long), and were so happy to finally arrive in the beautiful Emerald City.

Our first stop was at the Breckon's, where the kids climbed trees, played with the dog, and teased Grandpa to no end. With perfect Seattle summer weather we headed to Robinswood park for a picnic and feeding the ducks. Summer couldn't get any better!

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Monterey, California

I LOVE THE BEACH! And it had been too many years since I saw the ocean, so Rob and the kids were kind enough to travel well off the interstate on our way from L.A. to Seattle to spend an afternoon in the sun and sand. We stayed overnight in the regional garlic capitol of Gilroy (pee-yoo!), and headed out early the next morning to the coast.

We started out by driving to Carmel, which was beautiful, ritzy, crowded, and very foggy - and therefore not very family-friendly. Before we could even spy the town's famous mayor we decided to head back north a bit to Monterey. There we found a perfect public beach and settled in to watch the crowds of 4th of July weekend beach-goers. It was so perfect: smooth, fine sand, gorgeous water, and sunny but not too hot. The kids collected seashells and tried out swimming with wetsuits from the nearby sea kayaking company with Rob. Alex got sand in every crevice while I lounged on a beach towel nearby, daydreaming of the beach cottage we will own someday. As the sun got low in the sky we packed up and grabbed some peaches and strawberries from a fruit stand on the nearby highway before heading north again.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Disneyland

From St. George we set off with almost all of Rob's immediate family and drove down to Disneyland. Our kids are very spoiled when it comes to Disneyland visits - this was Haley's fourth time, and Jake's second (and Alex's first, of course). They can thank their Aunt Katie and her Disney enthusiasm that seems to carry everyone down there every few years. Not that repeated visits diminishes the fun. Not at all.

The kids could barely contain their excitement - we made sure they swam for hours the evening before so they'd actually go to bed. The weather was nice, the crowds weren't too bad, and the 4th of July fireworks display was incredible. Haley and Jake kept a steady pace all day long, taking turns with aunts and uncles and grandma going on rides. We stayed until 11:30 p.m., soaking in as much fun and family as we could. What a fun thing to be able to do with the whole family! Hopefully we'll be back in a few years when Alex is old enough to enjoy it.

I first went to Disneyland with the Wood family when Rob and I were newly engaged and they surprised everyone with a post-Christmas trip. Kaden was two years old then...now look at him!

Haley and Jake waited (with Rob) for almost an hour to see Tink and friends. Afterward Haley said, "That was it? We waited that long and it wasn't even a ride?!" Rob said, "Look! It's Tinkerbell's grandma!"

We stopped in Vegas on our way to California so we could check out the Pawn Stars shop from the History Channel show. What a zoo! I didn't even go in; Rob said it was packed with gawkers (like us). This was my paparazzi shot of Big Hoss as he crossed the parking lot.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - St. George

We left the heat of Salt Lake for the even greater heat of St. George. The kids were excited to go to the "desert," and see their grandparents and cousins. Rob's parents were in charge of this year's Wood Family Reunion and we hoped to make ourselves useful. Unfortunately I wasn't much help at all as I immediately came down with a nasty bug that knocked me out for several days. But Rob helped with set-up as well as the spectacular Amazing Race that had been prepared for Saturday morning. Family teams followed clues and raced around the town to complete tasks and sprint to the finish. It was such a great event! Later that night we joined the hundreds of other Wood relatives for dinner (oh-so-delicious and all made by Dad Wood) and a talent show. I may be a little biased, but my favorite performance was when Jake, barely 4 years old, got up and sang the Transformers cartoon theme song.

One of the "roadblocks" teams had to perform was to have one member rappel down the face of the Dixie rock.

The kids and I were the official race photographers. It was interesting trying to stay one step ahead of all the teams.

Did I mention it was H...O...T...? We tried to stay cool by playing in the water as much as possible. Here we are hanging out at a local splash park with Anna and Mike and their kids; Roger and Bonnie; and Grandma.

Grandma planned a big Girl's Day with Haley and Natalie. They baked cookies, went to have their toenails painted, and dressed up for a tea party. They were nice enough to allow Jake to crash the tea party.

One morning we drove out to Sand Hollow to go swimming. The weather was GORGEOUS, the water was the perfect temperature, and we had the beach to ourselves. It was PERFECT....

...Maybe too perfect. When we got out of the water to go home the kids complained of itching. They scratched and whined some more. It soon became frantic scratching and crying so we rinsed them off in the bathroom as best we could and hurried home to scrub in the shower. Crawling UP the slip-n-slide doesn't work so well. But that didn't keep Alex from trying.

Grandma and Grandpa have a great front-yard hill for slip-and-sliding. And Bonnie was an awesome hoser-downer.

A last, random memory: On the drive from Salt Lake to St. George, which was only 4 hours, Alex made it very clear that he did NOT want to be in his car seat any longer. We stopped at a gas station and bought a box of Kleenex, then drove on into the gathering night. The next 20 minutes were blissfully peaceful as Alex proceeded to pull tissue after tissue out of the box. One of the best $1.59 I've ever spent.

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Salt Lake City

Once again Wade and Nicole were kind enough to let us invade their house - if we can *ever* get them to visit North Dakota, we'll gladly return the favor. Haley and Jake enjoyed playing with cousins Ethan, Ellie and Mason in the fabulous back yard (hello, why hasn't the rest of the world discovered back yard misters?!?!?), and we also squeezed in a trip to the Hogle Zoo. The visit went by too quickly, but hopefully it won't be another 2 years before we get to come back.

On our way out of town we stopped to have a picnic of Robintino's pizza & garlic bread. Yummmmmm.

We also stopped at Temple Square to show the kids the Salt Lake temple. They loved the visitor's center, as well as watching the brides and grooms getting their pictures taken. What a beautiful, peaceful place.

Lastly we got to stop and visit with a friend from our earliest days in North Dakota. So fun to catch up, and five years is WAY too long between visits...miss you, Kristie!

Summer Odyssey 2010 - Grand Forks to Salt Lake

The first leg of our summer road trip took us near De Smet, South Dakota to visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead and museum. Due to a major storm system (tornadoes touching down all over the county) and a meeting in Fargo, we got a late start and drove into De Smet around 11:30 p.m. We were planning to camp at the Ingalls homestead and had only gotten vague instructions on the phone, so it was quite an adventure to find it and set up camp in the dark. We were c..o...l...d... out there on the open prairie, and heard coyotes howling at an uncomfortably close range, but the stars were stunning and the sunrise one of the best I've ever seen.

Haley and I have been reading the Little House series this past year and were very excited to check out the museum and homestead. We were not disappointed. We would HIGHLY recommend a visit - you can even reserve a covered wagon to sleep in. Westward, ho!

From De Smet we drove south and spent a night in Nebraska, then headed west through Denver to stay a night in Aspen Valley, Colorado. Rob and I took turns running that morning, taking in the stunning mountain views before starting the last leg of our drive into Salt Lake City. We were all SO tired of driving by this point, and while Haley and Jake were perfect little travelers with their DVD players, Alex was not. We stopped at a convenience store in Duschene for bribes and I fed Alex bits of Reese's Pieces all the way into the valley. Were we ever glad to get to the cousins' house!

Spring Into Summer

Spring is such a busy time for us, it always seems to fly by. Some highlights from the last few months:

Jake finished out his soccer season - let's just say they had a rough time of it. He liked going to practice sometimes but was often frustrated that he wasn't as good as he wanted to be. We're not sure if he'll play again, but we're proud of him for sticking it out and he sure looked cute in his jersey!

Haley finished FIRST GRADE! Can she really be that old already? She was so sad to be leaving her teacher, Mrs. G., as well as her friends. She is not sad, however, that she gets to stay up late and sleep in for the summer!

I celebrated yet another birthday...the kids made it so fun with decorations (thanks mom!) and cake. I felt very spoiled and blessed to celebrate with them.

Alex has discovered the joy of playing outside. So much room! So many things to explore and taste and grab and climb! So many pine needles in the grass that poke his hands and knees!

If you come over to our house and notice that in every bathroom the rolls of toilet paper are on the counter or back of the toilet...THIS IS WHY. He loves it.

Half Marathon - Part II

Whew! I did it. I finished the Half, and ran the whole thing. It wasn't my fastest pace ever, but you have to start somewhere. Race weekend was a lot of fun overall, with Haley and Rob and friends running the 5K on Friday night (Haley's first "real" race with a bib and everything!), and the Half on Saturday morning. Despite the rain and crowds, everything went smoothly and I got off to a good start. By mile 6 the runners thinned out a little and I could just focus on running instead of on avoiding the elbows and feet all around. I felt pretty strong until about mile 11, at which point I zoned out and just tried to stay ahead of the 11-minute-per-mile pace group behind me. Crossing the finish line in the Fargo Dome was an amazing experience, and I was so happy to just be done.

With almost 20,000 runners participating in the events, Fargo was THE place to be and it was thrilling and inspiring to see so many runners and their families. All of us are already talking about which events we'll do next year. So I guess I'd better still Run, Mama, Run!

Half Marathon Finisher!

Half Marathon - Part I

A lot can change in a year. Twelve months ago I was 7 1/2 months pregnant and growing more enormous every day. My legs and feet were so swollen that I could hardly walk to the park and back with the kids, and I only had one pair of flip flops that could fit on my feet. To get me to run any distance would have required my childrens' lives to be in danger or someone dangling a gallon of Haagen Daaz peanut-butter and chocolate ice cream in front of me. I had gone to spinning classes off and on throughout the pregnancy but by early summer I was just too huge and uncomfortable.

Fortunately I was able to return to spinning when Alex was a few months old, and it wasn't long after that when I began daydreaming about finally training for a half marathon, which has been a goal of mine for some time now. I decided to follow a 14-week program and run the Fargo Half Marathon, which meant that my training started in February. I trained on the treadmill in the basement, on icy sidewalks and flooded Greenway trails, in snow and wind and rain (cue Rocky music). On Saturdays I would peel the baby off my hip and wave goodbye as I went out on long runs, then come home and jump right into the regular weekend routines - soccer games, yard work, errands.

I certainly couldn't have trained for this without the incredible support from my family. Rob is my #1 fan, cheerleader, coach, physical therapist, and shoulder to cry on. The kids have cheered me on too, bringing me water during my long runs and acting astounded when I told them I ran 8, 10 , 12 miles. I can't wait to see them all as I cross the finish line; I'm sure I'll be a teary mess.

A lot of people like to compare difficult accomplishments to childbirth but I've never quite agreed - childbirth happens to you, and besides managing your pain you can't just decide to quit in the middle of it. So I will say: Training for this race has been the hardest thing I've ever chosen to do. There were many times I wanted to stop in the middle of a run, and training did not always go smoothly. I was sick a few different times, have a sore hip flexor muscle from an old injury, and had to deal with knee and IT band pain once I got into the longer runs. I came to realize the amount of mental strength that is required for something like this and often surprised myself with how strong I really am. I'm a very different person than I was twelve months ago and I'm excited to see what else I can accomplish in the future. I can't imagine running a full marathon, but who knows?

The race is in 33 hours and I'm full of nervous energy. I'm getting over a cold and the forecast for race day is for wind and rain, so I'm sure my time will be slow, but I'm excited to get it done. Watch for pictures and results, and wish me luck!

Uh-Oh!

I'm calling it: Alex's official first word is "Uh-Oh!" It's not really surprising, given the amount of mischief he's getting into lately. At 10 1/2 months he is a speed-crawler and a master mess-maker. Thank goodness for baby gates because he could practice climbing up and down the stairs all day long. I've been trying for months to get him to say "mama", but he just laughs and blows raspberries or shakes his head "no." What a little tease! So instead we have "uh-oh," which he says now whenever he drops his cracker, sippy cup, pacifier, toy, or washcloth (his favorite thing to carry around and gnaw on). I'm excited though - let the communication phase begin!

Haley Turns SEVEN!

Pure, crazy JOY is what you see on Haley's face. Instead of a big "friends" party, she opted to celebrate by having us stay overnight at a local hotel with a water park. They are always begging to stay over when we go there and this seemed like a fun birthday treat. We went with an "American Girl Doll" birthday and she was thrilled as can be to open accessories and play sets for her and Samantha. But she was truly surprised to find a Lanie doll under the wrapping paper of her last present. Her shriek of excitement must have startled the whole hotel.

I can't believe my baby girl is 7 years old. She is still as sweet as ever, quick to help me with Alex or fix a Transformer for Jake. She loves to play school, be a "chef" in the play kitchen, climb trees (or anything, for that matter), ride her bike, do any kind of arts and crafts project, sing and dance, write and illustrate stories, read, and play with friends. She has enjoyed gymnastics this year and is looking forward to swimming lessons and possibly softball this summer. It is exciting - and a little bittersweet - to watch her branch out and grow up. I try to remind myself everyday to enjoy these sweet children while they're little because it is flying by so quickly. I can't help but get a little choked up when I think of the tiny, 5-pound 14-ounce little bundle we took home from the hospital seven years ago. She has become such a beautiful girl and we love her to the stars and back. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Haley-Bear!

Official Soccer Mom

Jake started soccer this Spring, which I guess makes me an official Soccer Mom. We have the minivan and 3 kids, so I guess we are a bona fide stereotype. Jake likes going to practice, and likes wearing his jersey and practicing at home, but the games so far have been rough on their team. It's just not their year. But while they won't be going to any playoffs, I hope he's learning a much-needed lesson about sportsmanship and practice, practice, practice. He looks so cute in his huge uniform; I hope he'll play again next year!

Haley's Music Program

Haley loves to sing and has been eagerly waiting for her chance to perform at the First Grade Music Program. The boys and I were lucky enough to get to attend both the morning and evening performances. Haley wasn't nervous at all and all the kids did a great job!

It seems like we've had snow on the ground for Easter about half the time we've lived here. This year was mild and beautiful and we were all excited to get to hunt eggs outside. Happy Easter!

Mobility

Alex is crawling...and cruising, and pulling up, and climbing stairs. Get the baby gates, quick! This baby is on the move and I wasn't quite ready for it yet. No longer is it a good thing when he's quiet in the other room. He is very fast and determined and loves cords, paper, folded clothes, stale Cheerios, cardboard, Barbie shoes, and Transformers' arms and legs left strewn about from battles to the death. Let the toddler years begin!

My sister Kim had a scar on her forehead for a long time as a result of falling against a brick fireplace edge as a toddler...so I've been a little paranoid about this one in our family room since we moved in. When Alex got mobile I went out and found this protective foam; it's not even that ugly once it's on. One afternoon I came in and found him like this...SO effective! Now he thinks it's great fun to crawl over and pull it off.

Springtime!

We have enjoyed an early and mild Spring this year - we are so thankful for it and try to take advantage of the nice weather as often as possible! Some fun we've had lately:

Jake and I drove downtown one day to get a look at the flooded Red. It wasn't as bad as last year, but still pretty impressive.

Our ward's annual talent show, which Rob was in charge of this year. He performed several songs (above with our talented friend Mary), and Haley and Jake performed "Queen of the Waves" from Barbie in a Mermaid's Tale. Haley sang, Jake danced...I'll try to post video soon...too hilarious to not share.

Our first picnic of the year - the kids and I LOVE picnics and even though it was still a little chilly we decided it was time.

Six Months of Eating Your Veggies...

Last fall when we were at the Mall of America, Jake was just barely too short to ride on the bumper cars. He was so very disappointed and so we gave him the whole Popeye story, which he took to heart. Almost every night at dinner for the past six months you could hear us saying, "Bumper cars, Jake! Think of the bumper cars!" And what do you know...

This weekend we finally got to take our trip to the Cities, and Jake finally got to ride the bumper cars. Over and over and over again. Hurray for peas! And zucchini and green beans and broccoli and cauliflower and carrots...

The weather was beautiful while we were there so we spent a morning at the wonderful Como Park Zoo. It was chilly but quite a few of the animals were out anyway. It just felt good be outside in the sun! We have felt like caged animals ourselves these past few months.

I thought this was so cute. I told Jake he had to finish his graham cracker because the signs said "No Food or Drink." Of course, he asked why and I told him maybe the animals would be jealous of his snack. The inevitable, "What does 'jealous' mean, Mom?" I explained and a few minutes later I saw him standing in front of the seal tank like this.
